National road 120 Placing of foam-glass with Catepillar 778 D6R LGP
|
The main target is to prepare for recycling of alternative lightweight filling materials like foamglass, shredded tyres, pulverised fly ash, slag and similar materials. For the Public Roads Administration as a buyer it is of interest to define these materials as products in the best possible way – i.e. to emphasise on product specifications and environmental approval.
For foamglass and shredded tyres a literature survey has been performed on international papers and projects. Furthermore the usefulness of these materials is considered and their technical and environmental properties are evaluated. Guidelines for practical construction and control purposes will also be looked into. Pilot projects will be carried out in order to verify properties and expected behaviour and product specification will be prepared in order to have the materials environmentally approved.
Various pilot projects have been started involving instrumentation and monitoring of structures with foamglass, shredded tyres, and pulverised fly ash. These materials have so far been tested within these areas:
• Lightweight embankments (foamglass and shredded tyres)
• Frost insulation (foamglass and shredded tyres)
• Additives to lime/cement columns (fly ash)
• Drainage (foamglass)
So far foamglass has been presented as an adequate alternative in the revised standard specifications Handbook 018 Road Construction both as a lightweight filling material and as an insulation material. Furthermore foamglass is presently being added to the Handbook 016 Soil Mechanics in Road Construction and the Construction Code used by the Public Roads Administration. Experiences gained so far regarding shredded tyres as a lightweight filling material are presented in project reports from the Roads Recycled Materials R&D Program.
Project partners have been representatives from the regional road offices within the Public Roads Administration, the Swedish Road Administration, Rambøll, SINTEF - The Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology, the University at Luleå, Hasopor and RangSells.
