Gjenbruksprosjektet 2002-2005

6 "Recycled road"

Objective
The main target of WP6 is to perform field tests on recycled materials. This is obtained by field demonstrations of known solutions and testing of new applications where knowledge and experience is lacking. It has been important to gather experience from construction activities. In addition the project task provides valuable information regarding behaviour under traffic and climatic loads. Through full scale field tests it is also possible to analyse problems in connection with economy, logistics and environmental performance.
Two selected projects
In WP6 ”Recycled Road” two particular road projects have been selected, Euroroad E6 Melhus in the County of Sør Trøndelag and Euroroad E6 Assurtjern – Klemetsrud in the County of Akershus. In the near future reports from both these projects will be presented.
E-6 Melhus
The recycled materials applied at Melhus are crushed concrete in the capping layer, crushed asphalt used as a macadam binding material in the road base and foamglass as a frost insulating and drainage layer. In addition a selective demolition of houses has been performed. Planned lightweight sound barriers made of pulverised fly ash and shredded tyres were not included in the demonstration project due to a change of premises. The use of sound barriers in the form of walls made by recycled plastic materials are postponed but will be used on an adjoining road section.
E6 Klemetsrud
Here temporary storage and processing of concrete demolition waste produced on the site have been tested. The processed material was reused in the road base. A large test area for monitoring leeching products from the road base with crushed concrete and foamglass is located at a weighing control station alongside Euroroad E6. A mixture of crushed concrete and asphalt has also been applied on a smaller test section. In addition reused asphalt was also applied on the road shoulders, compost on the side slopes and foamglass as a lightweight filling material. The latest project is a concrete wall cast with aggregates where 100 % of the coarser fractions are replaced by recycled materials.
Experience so far
These tests show that recycled materials may well be used in practical applications. In many cases they are not only as good as traditional materials, but also superior to traditional materials.
