Concrete

Recycled concrete aggregate
In Norway some 1,1 mill tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste from concrete and masonry structures are generated annually. Approximately only one third of these materials has been collected for recycling in the recent years. The remaining parts are landfilled, legally or illegally.

The national goal, according to the national action plan for construction waste (2001), is to attain an anual 70 % recycling of C&D waste by the end of 2005. This goal proved to be too ambitious, but has nevertheless been an important motivator for acheiving better utilization, and developing more adequate handling and processing of C&D waste. It is now more and more clear that acheiving a high level of recycling in Norway does not depend on technical knowledge and fascilities, but on the administrative and legal framework given by the central authorities. Regarding technology and the quality of the materials available on the market, recycled aggregates may still replace natural aggregates in many applications in road construction in Norway.

Central receiving stations for demolition waste that also produce recycled concrete aggregate are "BA Gjenvinning" in Oslo and "Franzefoss" in Trondheim. Mobile crushing mills are also an option, due to large transportation distances.

Range of applications: pedestrian and cycle paths (base), roads (sub base), trenches, aggregates for new concrete etc.

Basis for documentation:
- Quality certification scheme for recycled concrete aggregate (administered by the Control board for concrete - Class V) which also includes classification of recycled concrete aggregate,
- ”Code of Practice for recycled aggregate” published by the RESIBA-project
- Manual 018 "Road Construction" published by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, which defines quality requirements, construction procedures and necessary documentation for recycled concrete aggregate for selected applications.
