Insulation materials

Materials for frost insulation of road structures are characterised by low heat conductivity and favourable material long term properties as durability and moist absorption. Commonly used insulation materials are e.g. geofoam materials (like extruded polystyrene XPS) and lightweight aggregate (like Leca/LWA light expanded clay aggregate). Foamglass based on recycled glass products (bottles, window panes, car windshields, fluorescent tubes etc.) is a new insulation material. This material has been utilised in a number of projects already both as a lightweight filling material and as a frost insulating material. Material properties, case histories and experiences gained are considered in WP5 of the Recycled Materials R&D Program.
